6l6gc or KT66

Postby justinsweber » Sat Jan 21, 2012 5:41 am

I was reading that a Kt66 can be swapped in for a 6L6GC is this true?
I do not currently have pin1 and pin8 jumpered.

Thank you

any thoughts on the KT66 vs 6l6GC?
Slightly more power or a wash? Has anyone run a KT66... Does it stress the power transformer the way the EL34 does? Or undue stress on the KT66 grids/ plates?

Thanx for all the help.
The amp has become the mainstay of my office rig.

The KT-66 is the Britsh equivelent of the 6L6G , no changes nesaccary .They sound is different but its a mater of taste .Though the KT-66 is a true pentode and the 6L6 is not , RCA coppied the KT-66 when they made the beam power tube (6L6G)Back in 1937

I thought the "KT" stood for "kinkless tetrode", and the anodes have big holes in the sides through which it appears there are beam formers. Are you certain the KT-66 is a "true" pentode?
"It's a different experience; the noise occlusion, crisp, clear sound, and defined powerful bass. Strong bass does not corrupt the higher frequencies, giving a very different overall feel of the sound, one that is, in my opinion, quite unique."

I may have the EL 34 and the KT 66 switched , but RCA coppied the KT 66 when they made the 6L6G :$

EL34 == true pentode
KT*, 6L6* == beam power tubes (to avoid paying for/butting heads with the pentode patent as the story goes)

Cheers!

KT77 vs EL34 and use of Edcor XPWR005-120

Postby justinsweber » Sat Jan 21, 2012 7:55 pm

I have a Chuby CLem built and am going to do the mod to add use of EL34s.

I read somewhere in another post that the EL34s may be pushing the max of the output transformer... is this true? As a KT77 draws less current... would they be a better choice?

Long story short, Id like to run the EH 6CA7... love the construction. I used them in my ST70 was was amazed by the sound. But if the Power transformer will be stressed.. then Ill pass. Additionally... what power increases are to be had. SE 6CA7 5k transformer, triode/ no feedback.
I believe I was getting 3 watts with the 6L6GC STRs

You leave the same cathode resistors in place for *all* the tubes, so no re-biasing or output tranny worries is necessary.

I guess the question was more about current draw and the power transformers ability to handle. Is running EL34s/KT77 ok with the spec'd power transformer?

What the cuurent rating of the of the 6.3 volt winding , if your not over the rating by 25% don't worry .

The EL37 is the true pentode version of the of the 6L6G
The 6CA7 is the tetroed version of the EL34 .

Personly i prefer the sound of the 6CA7 and the 5881's
