as I recall, the group of mad scientists at "Mythbusters" made up some "Edison" clone-ripoff very similar to this design...

The original basis of the "myth" was that old hand-turmed pottery might have recorded sounds from the ancient days.

They thoroughly busted that myth, but, as they feel the need to carry on and keep on trying until it works, they came up with a strange design that (sort of) worked.
