Asbestos or fiberglass? Pls help me identify

Postby deathman68 » Sun Jan 03, 2016 10:07 am

Hi all,

I recently came by a pair of vintage speaker cabinets that still sound great though I've been unable to determine origin. I decided to open them up and came up with the pic as shown below.

I suspect the insulation used is typical fiberglass, but knowing the vintage (1960's-70's) I thought I would reach out to the forum to try to verify if there is any possibility that this is asbestos. I know it wasn't typically used in speaker cabinets but wanted some degree of certainty before ripping it out to update the cabinet. Also if anyone has any ideas on the speakers (G102 and 719135 markings), I'm all ears!

Thanks,
Jeff

It shouldn't be asbestos, no real reason to have it in a speaker. I have a radio somewhere with asbestos on the top to keep the tubes from burning the cabinet. Asbestos is off white/ivory, tightly compact and rather stiff, where fiberglass is yellow or pink and fluffy.

Edit: Put a usually in front of all that.
At first I wanted to be a ET. Now I are one.

I've never seen asbestos in a speaker cabinet. Looks like wool to me.

Take a piece off with needle nose. Go outside and hit it with a lighter. That'll tell you ;)

I see asbestos pads in old radios. It is a lot messier than what's pictured.

Fine wine comes in glass bottles, not plastic sacks. Therefore the finer electrons are also found in glass bottles.

Thanks all for the replies. I will take my chances knowing the odds of it being asbestos is low! Now to figure out what the speakers are.

All the best,
Jeff
