Very similar to my Karlsons setup, with external Altec HF horns and drivers.

wouldn't that design cause lots of echo and reflection within the box...?

They are a bass cab only and work well. No reflections to worry about.

just out of curiosity, what is considered the highest "non-splashable" audio frequency? that is, unaffected by MDF/thin wood?veneer?etc....

The original Karlsons used full range speakers, and no filler / fluff inside the cabinets. they tended to be very "shouty" around 1 to 2 KHz.
Moving the High Freq horn on top of the cabinet was a huge improvement over the original concept.
