Ariels. Built 2002 so need a respray on the baffles. Can't get the Vifa drivers now though. Around 92dB.So can run from small amps like ST-35. Everything Lynn Olsen said about these is true.

Might build some frugalhorns and an RH84-SE as a simple alternative.

Hi folks,
Just thought I'd share with you images of my new budget build speakers. I started with an 8x4' sheet of 25mm MDF, an offcut of 40mm Iroko and a pair of 2nd hand B&W 601 S2 speakers. The tweeters were a bit tatty with a child having pushed the domes in previously. I got them back out with sticky tape, but you could still see the creases. Also, one tweeter wasn't working as the filament wires had been broken. With great care and a steady hand, I managed to solder them back so the tweeter worked again, but I didn't trust them, so decided to replace them with a pair of Monacor units. I reused the original B&W crossover for cost reasons, but this can be an easy future upgrade.
As I'm not an audio engineer, I used Troel Gravesen's TQWT design as a basis, only reduced in width slightly to better suit the smaller B&W driver. The cabinet is all biscuit strip and glued construction and very strong.









And here they are after the cabinets were painted in 2 pack and final assembly. I think they look not bad at all, but more importantly is how they sound. Well, just like the original B&W speaker, but with sledgehammer bass behind them! I'm very pleased with the result, seeing as they were always going to be an experiment without any real guidance or experience to work from. I was a bit cheeky fitting the B&W badge for a factory look





Final cost of the build including all materials was £195 or $313, so not too bad. I think I'll enjoy them for a while before trying something else.

Just completed my first DIY attempt . A set of Audio Nirvana Standard 8s in a simple reflex cabinet.

Here's the left channel of my home brew horn loaded sound system. In the corner sits a tapped horn w/18" driver. To the right you see a paper mache horn loaded with a JBL 2446 110 1w1m compression driver. Beneath that you see a 100hz mid bass horn of my design loaded with a B&C 12PE32 driver.


The sound is remarkably life like. The right channel is similar, but the bass horn is a folded horn that I designed. It's extremely efficient.

I wonder how well this can be done with wood veneer?

I call these speakers Monaco, they use all Dayton components

Built these with some spare Vifa P13's I had cheap from Ebay some years ago and D27TG from Ebay (somebody had a stack from a speaker company)
7 Litre cabinet with a simple series crossover. Walnut veneer on 18mm MDF and leftover Tolex on the baffle made from leftover 7mm HDF flooring.
Took most of the design from diyAudio thread lead by "Rabbitz"
Running them in my office off an RH84 with SRPP preamp from Diyaudio projects site.

Sonus Faber use leather (it did cross my mind). I think there are a few out there with faux leather baffles etc.
I decided to do this with as many leftovers as possible.
I did do a search to see if anyone else used Tolex or similar (Rexene) and wondered if it was a mad idea. Did it anyway. I like the way that Tolex doesn't really pretend to be anything else any more even if it did start out as a kind of imitation leather. In the 70's people paid extra to have it stuck on the roof of their car to kind of 'Americanise' it.

Alpair 7 in some top-firing folded horns, the design of which a coworker sent me. Has a fuller bottom end than my Pensil 10p, but the Pensils are more detailed and accurate.

Sound is loud, clear, fast, and very impressive.
The solid deep bass, with regard to the speakers of small diameter, precision and clean mid range, but I will do some for the frequency spectrum above 10kHz and have something to add to the linearization of the entire spectrum.
Box is not critical of position to place in the room and the distance from the wall, and mean greater sensitivity 100dB / 1W / 1m allow sound with small-amps like big-amps with a full concert experience!
I have a small peak at the 800Hz feature (which must be solved by using an additional filter), and the continued decline of ~ 3-4dB / oct. above 10kHz (I'll add some super tweeter correction).
I left the possibility to combine different speakers connecting and get a different nominal impedance of the box (6, 24 and 96 Ohms) for connection to the OTL tube-amplifier (with an additional small transformer that will adapt the impedance of the future super-tweeter).
