Speakers for ST70?

Postby dcriner » Thu Oct 26, 2006 4:17 pm

What would be speakers that look appropriate and sound good with an ST70? My price range is $500-1000 for a pair.

It seems like today's manufacturers are aimed toward home audio -- surround sound, middle channel, and powered woofer. This isn't what I'm looking for.

Should I be looking at vintage, old speakers?

You didn't say what kind of music you liked. I will assume your not looking to "rock out" with earthshaking base heavy metal.

These are excellent speakers for refined listening.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I like classical music, not rock.

The specs for this speaker recommend a minimum power of 35W, which is maybe the maximum power per channel from an ST70. Problem?

I had a set of CBM-170s running on a ST35 with no problems at all.
They recommend a minimum power to insure that amplifier clipping will not occur. With solid state amps, clipping feeds high levels of DC into the speakers which is speaker death. Tube amps with output transformers cannot pass DC to the speakers. An ST70 or even an ST35 will drive those speakers with no problem.

Hi All,

Doug, If I might direct you to the "Speakers" thread under "Stereo 35", you will find some excellent suggestions for speakers (including my own for the Dynaco A-25). What was good for the ST-35 is just as good, or better, for the ST-70.
