I've always wondered about this. Are there really molded adapters that adhere to 3/4"? For example, I was looking for a 3.5mm female to stereo RCA male adapter on eBay and the sizes seemed all over the place.

Yup! Pomona makes the adapters.

I never concerned myself with the 3/4" rule until I began promoting gear at audio festivals or commercial stores using molded connectors. If the gear doesn't fit the existing setups, or the audiofest host has to McGyver a connector........ =:o

I've always gone with 1" spacing on RCAs ... and 3/4" standard on binding posts, as well as keeping
black in the center and 8 ohm and 4 ohm on either side. A lot of amps don't adhere to that.
I use Pomona 3/4" banana jacks on all of my speakers, but I guess a lot of people use bare wire.

As far as RCA's .... the standard is 5/8" not 3/4" !
I just measured on Sony, Denon, Fender, Adcom and Marantz equipment here at work, all 5/8"
Old Dynaco tuner was 1 1/2" haha

5/8" inch be difficult on the RCA jacks I use, they mount in 3/8" holes with washers,
I think 5/8" would be impossible.

Check that ruler Gregg.

Hi Tom,

Yep, the old standard was 5/8" - Then Japan set a new standard and you cannot even buy new production ganged stereo RCA's now that aren't 3/4". *edit* (read the download... wow! Never seen that and I do use Switchcraft!)

Part of the reason was connectors - quality connectors won't fit a 5/8 CTC =:o

Personally, I don't care.... I was just pointing it out :$

Cheers!

I was just interested and googled around and found nothing about *any* standard, so I took
the ruler around the building and measured some things. All older stuff ... 5 years plus,
but all 5/8"

My first experience with RCA plugs was at about age 10 when my father brought home a
Telectrosonic reel-reel tape recorder that had RCA ins and outs. The speaker jack was an RCA
with a switch that disconnected the internal speaker when you plugged in an external.

Well all of my stuff had 1/4", so I drilled the rivets out and put 1/4" jacks in the thing.
One of the issues then was the plastic bezel had a very small tunnel to the RCA jack
which was pretty small, maybe 7/16" and most of my fat phone plugs didn't fit in
there, so I cut the hole bigger. Never looked so good after that, but I recorded and
played many hours on that tape recorder, even added a toggle switch so I could record
and play on either track. It was mono, but with a 1/4 track head and preamp for the
other stereo channel.
