GSG: 300B vs. 6B4G ???

Postby greg788 » Thu Feb 20, 2014 8:20 am

I have some questions about the 300B version:

1) All else being equal (same brand output tubes, etc.), does the 300B version sound better or worse than the 6B4G? I can't find any answers searching this forum

2) If I only use the standard specification 10 watt output transformers with the 300B version, do the output transformers run really hot, sound distorted, etc. In other words, are you pushing the envelope using 10 watt output transformers with the 300B?

3) with the 300B version, is it 410V plate voltage and 60 mA plate current?

I may be biased... but I preferred the sound of 6B4G. I have built 3 of the GSG as 300Bs... which cheap iron and even slightly nicer... and I preferred the sound of the 6B4G. With the 300B your going to have 5watts... you will not be pushing your 10watt iron at all.

I too built both versions and I prefer the 6b4g version more. I feel that the 300b needs to be pushed harder than what the GSG is designed for. Having said this, the 300b version isn't terrible sounding. You will be fine with the 10w OPT. You probably want to go with SS rectification get the most B+ but even than you will be hard pressed to hit 380 vdc.
