Using James JS 6115-HS 4 ohm tap?

Postby fran604g » Sat Nov 23, 2013 8:38 am

Hi folks!
Been a long time since I've posted, but I have a question.
Can I use the 4 ohm tap on these for my AR3a's? They do have 4 ohm taps.
I know the low power amp/power hungry speakers deal, so please spare me the opinions about the volume level and such.
Mostly I'm curious if the design on the GSG is such that I would have to change anything in the circuit to run the 6B4G's with 4 ohms out to avoid damaging anything (like the PT). Can the PS handle this load?

Thanks in advance,
Fran

Hi again folks,

I realize that the 4 ohm output should be less load on the tubes, but is there any concern doing this? I don't understand the design considerations and I only ask simply because I can't find any G*S*G builds using 4 ohm taps here.

i just don't want to do something with horrible consequences. I'm thinking of adding 2 more sets of speaker binding posts, or maybe a switch for 4/8 ohm.

Thanks again,
Fran

See the pic of my GSG in the post "GSG finished" below. I just used a terminal block to switch between 4 and 8 ohm taps on the James 6112. My speakers are around 6 ohm so I use the 4 ohm tap with them as recommended by the designer.

Thanks John, but there's no link?

I was actually wondering about any internal changes to the circuitry for optimization with the lesser load. I don't know if there would be any difference as far as the tube operating specs, and I am not knowledgeable enough to figure it out by myself.
