How warm should the power transformer get?

Postby Martin G » Tue Jul 17, 2012 6:47 pm

I've got a GSG that my buddy built with Edcor transformers. Sounds great pushing my Klipsch Heresys. The transformer seems a little hot though. Not so hot that you can't touch it but warmer than other tube amps I've touched. Does this seem normal for this amp or should I be checking some component values?

Hi Martin ...

I built a get*set*go with the Edcor XPWR-005 on Saturday, due to the
chassis size, the rectifier tube is only 1/2" or so from the power transformer.
I don't think it's too hot, especially if you can leave your hand on it
for a long time. There are other threads on the forum about this,
but I wouldn't be concerned.

Most power transformers are rated 160F , which is much hotter than you can touch .

In the GSG, the PA-774 and similarly rated power trannies run at a significantly lower temperature than in an SAT-35 or SCA-35, inwhich the tranne gets about hot enough to raise a blister =:o :'(

In the GSG and in my 6AV5GA amps, it's fairly warm, but not painfully hot to the touch.

I also used the XPWR-005 for my GSG.

I'm running it tonight, and it has been on for a good three hours or so. I'd call the PT "barely warm". I can put my hand on it for any length of time without even the slightest discomfort. I've got some Dynaco Mark III and ST35 amps, and those PT get stinkin' hot. If I can think of it later, I'll put a non-contact thermometer on it and give you an actual number.
"It's a different experience; the noise occlusion, crisp, clear sound, and defined powerful bass. Strong bass does not corrupt the higher frequencies, giving a very different overall feel of the sound, one that is, in my opinion, quite unique."
