Has anyone tried using a larger choke?
Edcor sells a 5H @ 200ma is this too large.
Will adding a bigger choke increase dampening factor?

It will lower power supply ripple even further, and would be a fine sub.

Edcor has a 10H 200ma choke for $16 more... Again... any downside beside price? Is this helpful or too large?

Sorry for the basic question. I guess more caps could be used to filter DC, but I like iron :-)

Hi,

Why do you feel you need so much filtration? The Get *SET* Go is a fine amp as-is.

Cheers!

Fine wine comes in glass bottles, not plastic sacks. Therefore the finer electrons are also found in glass bottles.

Ive had good results lowering hum on other p2p amps ive built by increasing the choke size... This is going to be a gift for my Dad... just wanted to go a bit crazzy.

That said... any hard going from a 1.5H @ 200ma to a 10H @ 200ma? or is a 5H @ 200ma the best middle ground... and why?

Thanx,

Justin

Nah, it's not an issue unless DC resistance gets in the way and drops the B+ too much.

Edcor will have equal to or less DCR than an equivalent Hammond, so you'll likely be OK.

I like big iron as well. An amp with 47uF and lots of iron in C-L-C will, IMO, sound a lot better than those "modern guru" ones with a few farads and a silly resistor in C-R-C ;)

Cheers!

In the GSG, you can also replace R17A & R17B with another C-354 for a CLCLC filter. This *really* whomps the ripple into the dirt - looks like 1mVRMS on PSU Designer II.

I did exactly that, two chokes, for CLCLC, with a couple of my 6B4G GSG builds, and it does just as Shannon says, makes it totally, dead "black background" quiet.

To answer the first question, a larger choke will have little or no effect on the damping factor, that is a function of the combination of the 6B4G, the OPT and the actual speaker loading.

And a higher inductance choke will lower the ripple, the bigger the better, as long as its DC resistance doesn't get too high, else that couldlower the B+ voltages.

I decided to follow good advice and get two C354 chokes.

Dumb question. For R17A and R17B... How do I wire in... Place a pumper across both holes of R17A or R17B and add 1 wire of the choke... Is a jumper across needed? How do I install.

Sorry for the basic question. Anyone need help with Mental health... I can be really helpful... Electronics/tube building, not so much :-).

R17A and R17B are wired together in parallel on the circuit board. Just ignore one completely (do not solder anything into the holes) and solder your extra choke into the other.
"It's a different experience; the noise occlusion, crisp, clear sound, and defined powerful bass. Strong bass does not corrupt the higher frequencies, giving a very different overall feel of the sound, one that is, in my opinion, quite unique."

Can I Use Hammond 156B Choke?

Postby scalardia » Sat Nov 17, 2012 2:21 am

Got two Hammond 156B chokes, 1.5mH, 5A, 0.07ohm, 400vdc. Is it good enough for J5?
I notice its impedance only 0.07ohm, is it too low? need an amendment? how many ohms? 3W ok?
If I use the other choke in R17a+R17b, it's 90ohm, another resistor necessary put here?
Need your advise.
Thank you very much! Cheers,
