Yet another GSG - but a question on testing

Postby katabatic » Mon Jun 07, 2010 3:05 pm

Well, I've finished wiring it up, and checked my work several times. Now to run through the power-on voltage test, but...stupid question time...where do I put the other probe for the tests? On one of the two TP test points on the board? At a ground?

I have a feeling I should know the answer to this....
I'm also trying to attach a pic from the gallery, we'll see if that works. (If not, I guess I need some advice on that too.) Thanks in advance.

George

Nice clean build!

The negative lead of the meter goes to ground.

You can loosen the unused terminal on J6 and slip it under
there and tighten it. Then use one hand on the red probe
and take your readings, and put the other hand in your
pocket.

I've built about 7 of these, and haven't taken any readings.

They just work!

Thank you, Tom. I ran the measurements last night (with left hand firmly in back pocket; high voltages scare me) and all was well (or close, anyway). So I decided to hook it up to the only speakers I have at the moment, KLH 17's, which I knew are way too inefficient to be usable. Or so I thought. This puppy will actually drive them to what I consider normal listening volume with the control volume about half way up! The bass seems a bit thin (at least compared to the Dynaco SCA-80 which normally runs the speakers), but the midrange and top end are magical! (I'm wondering if the thin bass is the result of the amp trying to move those large, heavy 10" woofers)

I'm planning on building some full-range speakers (Fostex FE166En's) for the GSG as a next project, as soon as I finish veneering the base I made for the amp.

This has definitely been an enjoyable and educational experience. My thanks to Shannon, you and the others on the board for your assistance and encouragement.

Nice clean build! Well done.

George, just a caveat. With tube amps, it is recommened
to always have a load on the output (speakers or a
high-wattage resistor of the proper value) when you power
them on.
Lovely build. Enjoy!
