G*S*G Hammond Output Transformer Option

Postby muschy » Sat Oct 18, 2008 9:23 pm

Hi all:

I've got a GSG to finish, and since Euphonia closed and the 6115 or 6123 aren't available as easily anymore, I'm just wondering what people have been using for alternatives on their GSGs. I was thinking about using Hammond 1628SEAs for outputs. Anyone else done this, or thought of it?

Thanks for any help or advice you could provide.

The 1630SEA may be a better choice (3.5k primary). Edcors are also good as are Transcendar, One Electron, etc.

Maybe it's time for a SE transformer shootout! :o

Good point Terry, thanks. I like the idea of a SE transformer shootout. Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_03

I just finished mine & used Transcendars...even shipped to the UK these were good value & sound great...TONS of Bass & a full sound on my setup. They also look good. If you are on a megabudget & don't mind open frame I would consider Edcor.

Nice, where did you get them from? If you don't mind me asking.

http://transcendar.com/
They were very easy to deal with as I needed 15ohm made to order.

The aforementioned Hammond OPTs (1627, 1628, 1630) are good single-ended trannies, but they are huge and heavy "monsters" going at least 11 pounds each... :o

I'd rate them bout a half-star better than the Transcendars, but then they also cost about 50% more, each.

If money is no object (hah!!!) Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_04 :o Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_08 :o Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_04 then Magnequest has some excellent options. The aforementioned RH-60s are their "entry level" OPTs and still have excellent sonics.

Anyone of the Hammond SE 1600 series will give you a good bass due to large inductance, but some have excessive primary DCR of over 400 ohms! (A lot of copper loss). The old 1628SEs had some quality issues with the infamous 13kHz dip. I think the newer ones in 1600SEA series are fine. I am using a pair of 1627SEA in my WE91A 300B and they sound fine.

If money was no object, I'd go with Electra-print or Hashimoto OPTs, both of which are readily available in the US. -Min

P.S. I believe I bought one of the last pairs, if not the last pair, of 6113HS' from Euphonia when they auctioned them off on eBay. Sorry!

Would these Edcors be a satisfactory replacement for the diytube endorsed James 6115 output transformers? Or will their frequency response of 70-18,000Hz limit the amp to much resulting in a dull sound?

I'm less concerned about the transformer rated bandwidth than I am about the plate impedance being way too high. Maybe if you start getting creative (running 4 ohm speakers on 8 ohm rated transformer taps, or 8s on 16) it might work just fine. I don't really know - I haven't tried it myself.

Will this work ok ?

They also list a 2.5k tranformer.

Thanks

Did Ed ever get his transformers for his get*set*go? I'm shopping for a pair, and $40 for a set of Edcor GXSE seems like the cheapest way to get started.

Hello Ty
I ended up with transendars, hope to have my build finished in the next week or so.

Keep us posted on your build.

These actually have a very good frequency response as long as the power output is kept to a reasonable level:

Derating for hi-fi use is recommended. I recently built an amp with the beefier GXSE line and have no complaints whatsoever about bass response at 3-3.5W...

I already have a pair of Transcendar 5K-8 which I used on a Simple SE amp I built last summer. They're great transformers. I might just end up stealing them for this project, but there is something about taking apart a working amplifier that makes my stomach turn.
