The g*SET*go looks like a great starter amp. The James 6115HS listed in the manual is not currently available on the Euphonia website. Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_13 What are the specs for the OPT? Has anyone had good performance with Edcor or Hammond open frame units?

Thanx

Hi,

I like the Edcor open frames fine, but you'll need some gNFB to flatten them out for power levels exceeding 2 watts or so, even though you have a 15 watt core with them.

The GXSE has better low frequency capability (and will probably replace the XSE eventually rumor has it [same for the pp units]), but I haven't tried them yet. You probably don't need as much NFB, if any for those for 20Hz-20KHz.

Folk that have compared the Edcor and Hammond side-by-each have chosen the Edcor in most cases.

Cheers!

The 6115 has 5 and 3.5K, the tap is 43% for 5K, and 50% for 3.5K. Either one of the two plate loads will work fine. I think many prefer 5K for less distortion, but less power.

Edcors are pretty good, even though I hear good things about Hammond 125ESEs. I would give 10W Transcendar irons a try. They are seriously good sounding SE OPTs for the price ($105/pr). You can get 'em on eBay from a seller named, "ggaet".

:) Thanx abunch - I also did more reading on the board and found Ed Brown's SET CAD comp for several different OPT. Very interesting.

The 3.5 / 2.5K James OPTs (6112HS) also work fine with the GSG. I originally built mine with 5K / 3.5K, found I liked the 3.5K sound and replaced them with the 6112s, then I used the 5K (6113HS) OPTs in a very nice sounding 13EM7 SET amp.

I haven't yet tried 2.5K with the 6B4Gs, to see how that would sound. 2.5K is the "old school" recommended 2A3 / 6B4G primary impedance, along with 300VDC B+, but then the new manufactured 6B4Gs and 2A3s are quite a bit "tougher" than the vintage ones.

IIRC, the 6115HS has been replaced with the 6113HS, but since neither one shows up on the website, they must be out of stock of the 5K / 3.5K primary OPTs. The 6112HS are listed as in stock and ready to ship, but it always pays to contact Keith first - the website hasn't been updated since November 2007.

Euphonia's "on hand" stock situation can be quite "variable" at times...
