Wiring up my volume control

Howdy.

I am putting a volume control on the front of my GSG so that way if I have a source that is hard to control (like a computer) I can just twist a big ol knob and make it shut up. I could wore this inline with the input jacks, so that when the knob is left, the resistance is high and the signal on the plates is small.

However, I have also thought of using a shunt control, i.e. all of the signal aims for the plates, and then you gradually let more of it go to ground as you turn the knob left. Any suggestions to implement this? I don't think just a straight path to ground is the way to go, generally there is a voltage divider hooked up there.

Please note that when I say "potentiometer in shunt" that does not mean a stepped attenuator running as a ladder etc, which are advertised as shunts. I don't think they are the same thing.

I am basically thinking of taking the variable pot out of the direct signal path and using it to control how much signal is sent to ground or "shunted"
