Power Transformer Question

Postby RobertWStephens » Sat Jan 05, 2008 10:22 am

Hello! I finally got all my parts for the get set go. The PA774 I got was crusty on one side with whatever they laminate the iron with. Unfortunately it was the side I wanted to face forward. I tried scraping off the clumps with an exacto knife to smooth it out and improve the appearance. It still looks bad. I am going to rotate it 180. I exposed some bare metal in a few spots. Is this a problem? I will post pictures of my completed unit when I am done. Peace. Robert

any advice depends on what exactly the stuff is. is it hard, brittle varnish? is it slightly gooey varnish that hasn't cured yet? is it something else?

Hi Robert,
If it's the same crap that Hammond puts on their irons, you could use methyl chloride to get rid of it. I would then paint the bells then finish them. I like using automotive paints followed by clear finish + baking over night. If your "problem" entails how the irons functions, you need not worry except the orientation of the PT iron in respect to OPTs to prevent magnetic coupling. BTW, thanks for the "Valve Amplifiers" book by Mogran Jones that you sold on me on eBay a while ago. It makes a good reference. -Min

Anyone know what kind of tape that Transcendar uses on their iron? I would like to use this on some hammond's I have, sure make them look nice. If you look real close you can see it here.

It looks like gaffer's tape.

My OPT's are Transcendar's. The tape/cloth? looks sharp. I with I could cover the power transformer with the same stuff. I might have to email Gery at Transcendar for a strip of it. Peace. Robert

Hello SDS! I am glad you like the Morgan Jones book. I need someone to write a book about tube amps and circuits for people who don't like to think that hard. I am still trying to get my head around a lot of this stuff. Peace. Robert

This is the first book I bought and is helping me out with the basics.

Nope. A bare spot isn't a problem.
