Will the magnequest DS-025 work well in this circuit . Have any of you used magnequest iron with this circuit and if so What did you use and would you recommend it . I know there are cheaper products out there that would do the job but i have been wanting to try magnequest for a while . Thank you AL

Hi Al -

Welcome to diytube !

I don't think we've had any reports on the Magnequest,
but I just looked the the specs on their website, and I'm
sure they would sound great.

Let us know how you make out.

Yes, my GSG has the Magnequest TFA-204 and they sound real nice, I have the material for another GSG with the James xfmrs, will be able to compare when I get the time for building.

The DS-025 or FS-030 would be serious "overkill", I'd also suggest the TFA-204, or do what I did and use the "Robin Hood" RH-60.

It's a 5K primary, so the output power will be a bit lower (around 2.5W) and the THD will decrease quite significantly, and for $100 apiece MQ OPTs, these sound fantastic! I had always been a bit skeptical about "pricey" iron, but this definitely shows that there is indeed a difference. Even with the humble 13EM7, the BCP-15 and EXO-45 from MQ work sonic wonders...

The RH-60s are open frame construction, with a brass channel frame, and exposed solder tabs, so they do need some insulation - I used heat shrink tubing "condoms" over them after getting a rather nasty surprise of a 412VDC "bite" during tube-out initial testing.
