Got 2A3s instead of 6B4Gs

Postby SDS-PAGE » Tue Oct 16, 2007 2:49 pm

Don't know why, but for some odd reason I assume those two were the same, so I got a pair of 2A3s instead of 6B4Gs. Tom let me know that 2A3 has a 2.5 V 2.5 amp heater. I tried running the GSG with it and I smelled 0.75 ohms resistors and diodes burning. So, the question that I have is what mods (if any) can I do to make it work with the 2A3s? I have no problem with getting 6B4Gs. Thanks!

Min -

You 'd have to get two 2.5 volt filament transformers
like the Hammond 166L2's. (you NEED two)
The cathode resistor would need to be about 1200 ohms,
and you'd put 100 ohm pots for hum balance across
each filament. It's probably workable. Take a look
at some of the 2A3 schematics on the web.

Thanks, Tom. I contacted Matt at Triode to see if I could get those 2A3s (still good as I tested) I purchased exchanged for 6B4Gs and he graciously agreed to help me out. I can't say enough about their good customer support. Hats off to Triode! -Min

Don't forget the octal sockets, too. Though a pair of 6A3 would work in there.
