New Mark III builds

Postby Wmacky » Sun Dec 13, 2009 10:36 am

Having finnished my Diytube ST 70 a a few years back, I'm ready for some monoblocks, but Have some questions.

I can't find any comments from Shannon about the obsolete CCS situation, and see the BOM still reflects the old part. Has there been any input from Shannon?

The second question, I had asked a while back, but got very few comments. My question was about options for upgraded transformers. I'd like for the Blocks to be All they can be so to speak. How risky is it for a newbie to use say something custom from say Electra print? Are there any "Drop in replacements" for either the power, or Output trannies? How does the Hammond replacement Shannon mentions compare to the standard Mark III replacement units from Dynakit parts, and Triode?

BTW, New trannies will need to be bought anyway, as these will be scratch built.

They are not totally obsolete yet. LM234Z also works.
I have stocked up and have at least 30 of them.

The Triode or Dynakit transformers are about the best out there, especially for the price.

Maybe call either of them and see what kind of transformer-chassis package deal you could get!

I used electraprint OPT's with the Triode Power Trannys...Sounds fantastic. If you cannot find the CCS's...Let me know and I will mail you some.

Has anyone tried the Edcor OPTs? They have a 4.2K PP at 60 watts for $70. I ordered some but they said they were backordered until first of Feb. :'(

The premium Edcors are on a par with Hammonds and Dynaclones.
I suppose you could use Magnequest or James iron at an additional cost.
You might consider using an OT rated for 30 to 50% more power or even higher. This should give you better bass response since the core will be less likely to saturate.
