Hi, I grew up with tubes in the 60's, recently got re=infected with tube mania spending too much on ebay for various scrap iron. I just sold an ST70 that i restored but didn't make a dime on, loved its sound, not LOUD ENOUGH. Meanwhile I bought a pair of very crusty mk2's, ya know, zinc plated & ugly. After reading all the stuff about Posiden I thought I'd give it a shot. Finally today they are up and running, sounding better every minute as these new kt88s get warm. I'm using JJ tesla tubes, read that some don't like the 12au7? any comments on new tube selections?

Hi kimbob,
Welcome to the group!
I have been using an Electro-Harmonix 12AU7EH coupled with a Sovtek 12AX7(LPS I think). They are both new production tubes. The combination seems to really bring out and separate the mids and highs in my current system. It seems to be a good combination for late 60’s and 70’s classic rock and 70’s progressive rock. I am sure there are better combinations out there however.
Go Vols!!! (ha-ha)

The JJ 12au7 tubes are very noisy and
mask alot of the sonic detail.

Look for NOS RCA clear tops or Tun-sol
12au7s. You'll be glad you did.

Thanks for the kudos, Kimbob! Glad you are lovin' it, and have a Sierra Nevada PA for me. BTW, you'll have to hook up with the Dixie Bottlehead group over in Knoxville sometime.

The voltages get a bit scary, but i love the bias balance! I'm on my 5th Sierra Nevada, the place will be shaking tonight! I'm using JJ tesla tubes, read that some don't like the 12au7? any comments on new tube selections? I love the bass response on these blocks. Has anyone parelled a quad of mk3's? I'm half deaf, love it bone shaking loud, but CLEAR!

I'm using JJ ECC 802 s & New issue Tung-Sol 12AX7. I find this to be the best sounding (full range!) combination so far. I have tried many combo's and this one stands out. Especially for Jazz & Classical. Give it a try, You may like!!!

Hi kimbob,

I use NOS 5751's as the VA in my poseidons and NOS 12BH7's as the phase inverters. No complaints here. The amps rock! I use them in my home theater. I haven't tried some of the other combo's mentioned here.

Ed,

I can't remember if I've asked you before... on your Poseidons, are you using the component values from Shannon's schematic or from Ned's TubeZone version?

Ned has slightly different values for a couple of the resistors. Presumably to optimize the circuit for the 5751/12BH7 combo.

Hi Ty,

I'm using Shannon's values. I use these amps in my home theater and they rock the house and sound fantastic.
