Capacitor placement on SCA 35

Postby DeathRex » Thu Apr 05, 2012 6:27 pm

On the power amp board, PC10 or 13, would it be better to put the output coupling capacitor (0.1uf) under the board because of heat radiated from the EL84s? Does heat affect film caps like it does electrolytic?

Underneath the SCA-35 chassis, there isn't much room (i.e., < 0.5"), so I'm not sure what can fit underneath. You should pay attention to temperature ratings of capacitors, especially electrolytics. Some film caps are rated for higher temperatures than others. Any caps containg oil like paper-in-oil caps might be susceptible to heat degradation.

If temperature is a concern, implement Dave Gillespie's EFB mod, and you won't have to worry about heat with the SCA-35 anymore.

I'm putting in green Russian paper in oil caps.
