Thoughts on which power transformer to use.

Postby justinsweber » Wed Dec 30, 2009 2:43 am

I was looking at the various options for power transformers... Does the Triode PA774 with its due 6.3 windings seem the best choice or using the hamond?

Im looking to keep things simple... but why love to know why one is a better choice over the other.

You might take a look at the Edcor XPWR005. The price is very attractive, and the specs are remarkably similar to the Dynaco unit.

The Get*Set*Go is often built using the Dynaco power transformer, but I opted to substitute the Edcor instead. In my opinion, it worked out perfectly. I haven't seen anyone use the Edcor on a ST35, but maybe someone will speak up.

Here's a photo of the XPWR005 side by side with a PA774.

IMHO the PA-774 is kinda marginal, and they run really hot. I've used many Hammond 270HX and 272HX with zero failures but some are mechanically noisy.

The Antek toroid 1T300 should be perfect for the ST35, they run cool, pretty much overkill on specs and are quiet! $29 for the trannie + $18 for the optional cover is still dirt cheap!

Im a complete newbe still...

From the specs looks like a drop in replacement... no changes needed?

What did the Edcor cost... Might be a real improvement.

$44 for it... seems great. $20 cheaper than the triode unit... but is it a drop in replacement? sorry to ask.. not sure I can figure out how to modify.

Dyna PA774
Edcor XPWR005

Electrically, the specs are identical. The wiring diagrams might have different colors, but nothing you can't figure out. Mechanically, they've got different mounting patterns - the XPWR005 takes up more chassis real estate.

I find the XPWR005 tends to run "warm", while the PA774 runs blazing hot. The one original PA774 I've seen is an ugly tar-dipped thing, but dead silent. My XPWR005 has an ever-so-slight hum to it, but only audible from inches away. I've never tried one of the clone PA774 transformers from Triode or any of the other suppliers.

Ive had a reproduction unit from Triode... worked great. I wonder if the larger size = better? The new unit was really nice... had a 6bg4 and a st35 with it. If it is quitier why not? If mounting on triodes chassis.. I wonder if it fits? ofcouse with new hole bit is it close enough?

There is a post in this thread that states that the Antek 1T300 power transformer is adequate for the ST35. It is rated at 150ma. Is this ok or would a 2T300 (300ma)be a better choice?
Thanks...Mike

Triode Electronics sells the PA774 power tranny for the ST35 and rates it at 180ma. So 150ma would be marginal. If cost and space are not an issue I would go with the 300ma.
