Custom amplifier plates anyone??

Custom amplifier plates anyone??

Postby tubes4hifi » Sat Sep 04, 2004 9:40 pm

I've built several of the DIY ST35s and am always playing around with new designs, if I can remember how to insert a drawing maybe someone who is thinking about building one of these amps would like a more custom look for their amp, so here's a layout that's a little different.
10" wide in front, 17" deep, all mounted on a 1/8" aluminum plate that sets on top of a standard Hammond chassis.
These are gonna run $70 apiece, could be slightly less if more than 5 people let me know they are interested.
Tube rectifier and power tranny in the center, with another 200uF of additional capacitance (optional), the 2 output trannys behind, and the speaker binding posts and input on top rear.
Hey, if you're gonna spend $350 building a nice amp, what's an extra $70 for something really special ??

bias holes

Postby Shannon Parks » Sun Sep 05, 2004 9:15 am

Hi Roy,

OK, I admit I don't have the bias holes documented all that well (maybe one sentence in the manual?). The idea on top mounting the holes is that I have a guide hole in the PCB in-between the two test pads and two pots which should be used as the center of a .5" or .6" hole in the chassis. Then the pot adjustment screws and the test points can be reached. You can stick your black DMM probe in the rear speaker connector as there is no connect for GND.

Good deal for custom plates!

bias pots

Postby Guest » Sun Sep 05, 2004 10:34 am

Hi Shannon and all . . . .
when I build your boards I prefer to use a single turn pot rather than multi-turn, and so the center points shift slightly which allows me to
use 2 smaller holes on each side rather than one HUGE hole . . .
for me it's just a matter of asthetics!!
But I can have the custom plates made either way, or entirely to your own personal specs!

Which iron?

What power and output trannies would these be punched out for?

Looks like a nice layout, especially for adding tube rectification.

Hey Ed,

Did you get my PM regarding the 565? My friend's starting to drive me nuts.

Hi All,

Seventy bucks a pop sounds a little excessive. When I was job shopping a few years (and, unfortunately, computers) ago for chassis for my 1773, I found a fab in Yakima WA that would do my chassis and bottom plate in 304 stainless, with powder coat, for less than $60.00 per in 25 lot quantities. That included studding for the tube sockets and filter caps. I don't have any electromagnetic records of the outfit, but if there's interest in this novel approach to chassis pounding, I'll go through my paperwork and come up with the name (if they're still in business).

custom top plates

Postby tubes4hifi » Sat Dec 11, 2004 2:59 pm

Hello again,
yes, I don't drop into this forum as often as I should, usually only when I'm looking for a new project or have something extra I need to sell off.
I can have any size/any layout for these custom top plates.
Also available natural aluminum, gold, black, or bronze anodized.
Since I don't stop in that often, you can always email me direct at
roymottram@yahoo.com or send a PM which goes to my email directly, thanks Shannon and everyone for your support!
