Got some high end buzzing

Postby K-MAN » Tue Jul 22, 2008 4:31 pm

I'm not sure why but the last month or two I get a sort of buzz static sound when I listen to records on my SCA35. It must be in the phono section because the sound from my other inputs like cd's is fine. It seems to break up mostly on the higher end sounds. I replaced the phono board with a new one during the spring and it was fine then, the 12ax7 tubes are original so could it be they need replacing? Pin 1 voltages are 150v and the manual says it should be 180v, also pin6 is 95v for the left tube and 105v on the right. Are these readings far enough off to be a problem. I appreciate any advice you have, thanks.

Yes it's a fairly new Audio Technica, I have the grounding wire from the turntable connected to my amp but maybe the static build up is somehow doing it?

Buzzing is on both channels?

Have any CCFL bulbs or light dimmers running at the time?

Fine wine comes in glass bottles, not plastic sacks. Therefore the finer electrons are also found in glass bottles.

Yeah it's on both channels, it sounds more like the sound breaking up like bad reception on a TV. I ordered some new 12AX7 tubes because I noticed that they were different brands and the voltage readings are different for them. What does the preamp use for RIAA equalization? I guess this is the problem of being an audiophile that any imperfections dive us nuts.

When that used to happen on my turntable and it wasn't a case of the stylus needing to be cleaned, I would take the short wires going from the stylus pins to the pins on the turntable arm off one at a time and use Caig DeoxIT red on them. Then I would do the same with the RCAs going to the preamp. The signals are very low level so it doesn't take much corrosion to cause a bit of trouble.
Also have you plugged some other low-level source into the phono inputs to see if its specific to the phono section? If its affecting both channels it could be something in the common ground going to or in the preamp.
Mike's N-1 Rule: When looking for N number of components to finish a job, you have a 95% chance of only finding N-1 of them.

Found the problem. I feel so stupid but the markings on my tonearm are not very clear so I thought the stylus pressure was 1.5g when it was actually .5g. I must have had it set there for awhile now, no wonder I wasn't happy with the sound Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_09

Btw, what could cause the low B+ voltage readings in my phono section? All the resistors are new on the board.
