Increase gain on ST-35?

Postby joeriz » Sun Jul 20, 2008 9:16 am

Any thoughts on a simple method of increasing the gain on a DIY-Tube ST-35 (besides adding a preamp)? It doesn't have to be a whole lot...I just find that for a few recordings, I could benefit from increased gain.

I do have a PAS-3x lying around that is in excellent condition but I think I'd prefer something simpler in the signal path. Perhaps a simple tube substitution? Changing the odd resistor or capacitor in the input/driver circuit?

Thanks much,
Joe

Unhook the NFB connection and adjust it to 60k on both sides. That should do it.

Thanks, Shannon.

Any possible downsides to this (e.g. higher distortion, etc.) vs. using a preamp?

A preamp is always handy, but depending on your application it wouldn't hurt to experiment. The specs would suffer, but if you just wanted 6dB less feedback, it won't be bad at all.
