Much better.....

for the DIY ST35, the Dynakit and every other PP EL84

Much better.....

Postby SteveH » Sat Apr 28, 2007 11:42 am

All,
I replaced the input cap in my ST35 down to a 1.5uF; and the world is good ! I was able to get the correct bias numbers, and my plate voltage is down to 377v. So, no more worries.
That being said - what bad could come out of having the amp on, with your source off ? As it sits now, I have the amp connected directly to a CD player; as I haven't made a preamp yet. My girlfriend's phone rang, so she shut off the CD player, and left the amp on. It sat like this for 15mins or so.....

Thanks,
Steve

Don't worry. Unless you heard some horrible noise from the speakers your amp didn't know the difference.

Good to hear it's working and sounding good Steve.

I ran into an old Limiter Amplifier from 1947 that had been on
for about 50 years with no problem. A few of the tubes looked
like originals too. No input is cool, but always have speakers
or a load hooked up.

Tom,
Well, I need to get these Bozak crossovers done. I will be ordering the parts for them either today or tomorrow; so it looks like it'll be a Saturday morning project for me.
After that, the next 'need' is a preamp. I've been going back and forth between ordering a foreplay III, or making my own (I actually etched the boards for my own design; but I think the bottlehead is still superior). Any other suggestions ? I sort of like the bottlehead idea for the price; plus I can easily make another enclosure to match my amp.
Also in the works; a very kind individual of this board has offered to supply me with some EV drivers; so I can try my hand at some speaker building. I also would like to try one of the GSG boards.......So it looks like I'll have enough for another year or so =)

How about you ?

Thanks !
Steve

Hi Steve -

Watch that fiberglass when you dig into the speakers !

I've been selling some Darlings on eBay, so if that continues to go well,
I'll make a new one every time I sell one. I have a little all 12AU7
headphone amp that Soren designed in the works, all the mechanical
stuff and power supply wiring is finished, I just need to wire the rest up.
I've been wanting to build something with 4 tubes per channel, in PPP,
but not sure what yet ... low power is cool, something to look nice in
my office at work, maybe 1626's.

Other than that - it's time to do a little yardwork (very little) and work
on my Jaguar XJS that has been doing little more than gracing the
driveway for too long !

Running an amp with no input won't hurt anything. SInce it's a new build, it needs some run-in time, anyway, though that goes more quickly if there is an audio signal present...

I wouldn't leave it "cooking" overnight, but a few hours of idle operation here and thre are OK..

work on my Jaguar XJS

You poor bastard, my heart goes out to you! Are you sure you wouldn't rather sell it to that guy you hate so much that's been such a pain in the ass? Let him wrestle with Lucas, prince of darkness. Think how good you'll feel when he reduced to tears because his hands are all lacerated because he thought changing the sparking plugs might make it run.

I don't mean to threadjack but... I spent 6 (six) hours getting my tail lights working on the TR6. Wiring up an ST-35 is childsplay.

A friend of mine has an MG with a Buick 283 in it. It was easier just to gut the wiring completely and start fresh....
Thankfully, I believe that Triumph motorcycles now use Bosch.

Should we get Shannon to start a British car forum?

I have a friend with a rubber bumper MG with a Mazda Miata motor and transmission in it. Lighter than original, 5 speed, 140 hp and with those cam covers it loks like a Lotus. Beautiful!
